The script

There is not much dialogue in typical opening scenes, but ours contains some. The speech helps the audience get an understanding of who the main characters are including names and what might the film be about. It gives the audience a feel for the personalities of the characters and lets them pick favourites. Our script/screen directions are below...

Instrumental of Beethoven's Moonlight Stanza is played whilst shots are shown of Eva walking to the church yard. No dialogue. shot pans up then cuts to library scene.

Alexis, Marco, Faye, Peter and Jack are all in the school library. Three of them are seated around the main table in the order Jack, empty chair, Faye, empty chair and Peter. Behind on the row of computers is Marco and Alexis, Marco is seated in the gap between Jack and Faye facing away from the camera. Alexis is also seated facing away from the camera but in between Faye and Peter, she soon moved to the main table and sits between Faye and Peter.

Alexis: Soo you guys? (pauses) [picks books up from desk in front and moves them to main desk leaving what she had on the screen up] what actually is witchcraft?

Marco: [places head in hands pushing hair back out of face] (mumbles under breath) This is going to take forever.

Peter: [gesturing in Alexis' direction whilst moving basket ball of the chair next to him onto the floor] Alexis come here. I found a definition. [pushes back laptop screen, points and begins to read it out]. {shot cuts to Eva walking into graveyard and crouching down by grave and speech becomes a voice over.} Witchcraft the practice of the mythical arts for example magic, this can either be black or white depending on the intended use. Which craft can also be linked back to the 1500's a time of spells, potions and the invocation of spirits. (fades out)

Title Evangeline is shown on screen. Shot then cuts back to the library.

Faye; [scrolling down website, pushes up glasses and moves hair behind ear] This website is actually pretty interesting. [looking up at website and writing sown notes]

Jack; [looks over Faye's shoulder at her computer screen] Hmm yeah I think I looked at that one [continues with what he was writing] *coughs* [scrunches up piece of paper and throws it at peter in a basketball playing fashion] I wonder where Eva is. I know She said she had to go somewhere first but ugh I swear shes been hours, [Tilts head back] I just want to go get food.

Peter; No idea, I'll call her. [reaches down into sports bag and pulls out phone, calls Eva]

This scene shows Eva walking after she has visited her mothers grave. she receives a phone call from Peter and picks it up.

Eva; Hello (pause whilst peter answers) yeah ill be there in a minutes (pauses) okay bye. [put phone down and speeds up her walking]

still on scene of Eva voice over is being played.

Faye; Listen to this quote from the bible. "Leviticus 20:27 man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.” Its talking about witchcraft.

Eva is shown walking into the library up the stairs and towards the group.

Eva; hiya [walks over to Alexis] sorry im late took longer than I thought.

Alexis: Ah hi Eva, come on lets go. [stands up and starts to pack away her belongings.]

Eva: [looking at James] you guys ready. [everyone gets up apart from Marco and begins to put their things away, and then leaves. Marco then puts his things away and walks out following the group. Camera pans across to Fayes computer that she had left on and zooms into the screen leaving an image of Evangeline up and the audience to realise that she looks like Eva.]

Originally our script was very short and the dialogue very simple and the more we read over it the more we realised that it didn't show who the characters were and their personalities this we needed to change so that it did and the audience could connect with the characters.

student opening examples

This film opening got full marks and it is quite easy to understand why:
- The genre is extremely evident, lots of conventions are included. For example, the blood and the boy standing behind the car at the end. The music also helps to illustrate the genre.
- The representations are good as young boys walking home from school and wanting to explore is something that would happen.
- The Mise en Scene is also powerful as the setting is eerie and relevant to the genre, the lighting is very good as it is filmed during the day but the weather is very dull and grey which adds to the scary effect. The use of the deserted setting is also very effective as it allows the boy being hit by the car to stand out a lot more.
- The child actors make the film seem a lot more realistic
- The titles are good and match the overall tone of the film, they're not too in your face.
- The shots are powerful and look very professional, especially the one with the mud puddle.
- The transitions are mostly straight cuts which makes the film more realistic and makes it scarier.
it is my favourite because it makes me question what happened to the boy and makes me want to watch the full film.

Representations

Who and what is being represented in the film?
in the film we are creating the main things being represented are;
witches,
teenagers,
curses,
and dark mystery.
these are all typical symbols commonly represented in supernatural mystery thriller films.

Charecter development

Physical description: Eva
    • Roughly 5'3"
    • British with Indian and American roots.
    • Brown/Redish bellow shoulder length hair.
Eva Louise Jones is the main character of the film; she was born in a small town in the south of England in the year 1994. She is the only Daughter of Marc Jones and Anya Jones, her father is a trained psychologist who is currently retired and working as a lecturer at the local college, her mother was once a medical doctor. Eva currently lives with her father and her grandfather in a large country house near the local church. She is currently attending her final year at sixth form studying three A Level subjects History Art and Chemistry. The plot is based around Eva discovering that she is a witch but not only that there is also a curse on her meaning she will not live past the age of 18. In the film she is currently 17 and 11 months meaning that there is only one month to her 18th birthday. Her personality is outgoing easy to get along with and genuinely strong willed. She is a creative individual who often strays from the crowd.

The main character Eva, will be played by an actor with dark hair and dark eyes this is because most films of the genre supernatural thriller and because of the 'stereo types' about the way different hair colours on girls make their personalities different. Brown hair is the perfect stereo type for our film as it is more mysterious.

Eva will also be shown wearing dark shadowy make up this is because it gives her a mysterious and slightly Gothic feel.

She will be wearing dark casual but dressy clothing for example dark jeans, black boots, a black top and a Maroon knit cardigan.
she is roughly

Eva’s mother died years ago in was a sudden, tragic and mysterious death. She was a loving woman who always strived to help people. She was always there for Eva when she needed her, being the shoulder to cry on and her best friend. She was married to Marc Jones and had been for 20 old years they met in high school and were in love ever since. She wasn't the type of person to hide things from people if she had something on her mind she would say it, but little did people know she was hiding a deep secret. For she knew about the curse that lay upon her daughter, and when she prepared to inform Eva of this curse in hope that they would find a way of stopping it she was gruesomely murdered by an unknown figure who left only a note, written repeatedly on the walls surrounding her dead body it read ‘she knew’. (This is a key part of the film and is referred to as part of Eva’s ‘flash back’ in a dream)

Evangeline Bancroft, identical to Eva Jones in appearance and build, she is one of the ‘past lives’ that Eva Jones unknowingly lived. She was a Californian glamour model well paid and well lived. She died in the year 1914 at the age of 18 due to being accused of witchcraft by her alcoholic partner; her death was a result of this. The way of death was unknown but her body found lying in the middle of the road with the numbers 499 calved onto her left forearm. These numbers are significant to the film because they represent all of the past lives ‘Eva’ has lived Evangeline being the 499th and Eva the 500th since the curse was set.

Alexis Swift is the best friend of Eva she is roughly 5’7” with beautiful curly red hair. She is very loyal and a key character to the film, although she is a very ‘Dazed’ character she is also very intelligent and extremely good at doing whatever it takes to find out the truth. Her and Eva have been best friends since the age of 6 when they met at an after school club. She is an only child to two parents one Tom and the other Susan Swift. Both her parents are lawyers meaning she comes from a very well off family; both her parents are very strict so along with hers and Eva’s rebellious nature results in her getting in trouble a lot.

Peter James is a very close friend to Eva and Alexis at roughly 6’ with short mousy hair. He has a strong build and is very athletic. He is a strong character in the film due to his leading nature and ability to tell right from wrong. He has grown up alongside Alexis as they are Cousins and have always been very close, it seems that he has a romantic eye for Eva and cares for her a lot.

Jack Matthews is 18 and in the same history class as all of the other characters, he other than Eva is the oldest one there, he has thick messy blonde hair and blue eyes. He is also very sporty and a very good friend of Peter, and is currently in a relationship with a girl called Mindy who is a Gymnast.

Faye Blake is 5’6 with beautiful long hair and brown glasses. She is smart and witty, she doesn't initially have a strong bond with any of the characters in the beginning of the film but the audience get to see this develop as the film progresses. She comes from a less well of family than the other characters.  She is the ‘nerdy’ yet ‘popular’ girl that all of the other kids are jealous of, most people would think that because of this she is not a very nice person and doesn't have much respect for anyone but in fact she is the complete opposite.

Marco Armstrong short with long mousy styled but messy hair, he is the more mysterious character as he tends to keep himself to himself. Marco struggles a lot in school and often gets frustrated when he can’t get something right the first time but this doesn't stop him from giving up as he always pushes through right at the last minute. He is always listening yet saying little but when he does he always knows exactly what to say.

Eva Marco Alexis Faye and jack are a group of students who have been put together for a history project, about witchcraft where they have to create a presentation and present it to the class. By doing this they discover the Evangeline curse and attempt to delve deeper into it hoping to find a way of protecting their friend from the terrible curse that lays in her tracks. This is the first film in a series, where the mystery continues and more trouble lays ahead.

Representations

Representations are created by people in the media industry to persuade a certain feel or image to the audience.
Definitions:
Stereotypes – Media institutions use stereotypes because the audience will instantly understand them. stereotypes are like a ‘visual shortcut’. They're repeated so often that we assume they are normal or ‘true’. A typical stereotype example is that all girls from essex wear fake tan.
Archetypes - This is the ‘ultimate’ stereotype. For example, the white stiletto wearing, big busted, brainless blonde bimbo.
Countertype -A representation that challenges traditional stereotypical associations of groups, people or places.
Representation – the way in which people, events and ideas are presented to the audience. To break it down, the media takes something that is already there and re-presents it to us in the way that they choose.

Gatekeepers
A media ‘gatekeeper’ is a person involved in a media production with the power to make a decision about something the audience are allowed to read, hear or see – and, of course, not get to see; for instance, a newspaper editor has the final say on what goes into his or her newspaper, where it goes within the pages, next to what other piece, with which pictures, strap-lines and headlines, etc.
E.g. in a newspaper the reporter would be the producer and the editor would be the gatekeeper. However the owner of the company would have the final say.

Moguls:
But in the example of the newspaper editor’s decision, this will not be made freely: it will have been affected by technical issues, by the kind of person who owns the newspaper, for example (i.e. the so-called media moguls, such as Rupert Mudorch), and by many other things.

Who, What, Why, Where?
When you’re analysing representation, you need to think about the following questions:
  1. WHO or what is being representing? Who is the preferred audience for this representation?
  2. WHAT are they doing? Is their activity presented as typical or atypical? Are they conforming to genre expectations or other conventions?
  3. WHY are they present? What purpose do they serve? What are they communicating by their presence? What’s preferred reading?
  4. WHERE are they? How are they framed? Are they represented as natural or artificial? What surrounds them? What is in the foreground and what is in the background?
The media can chose ways to represent information, such as the man who started the London riots could be portrayed as a family man or as someone who deserved it, depending on the types of pictures used. For example, there is one picture that shows him holding a baby and smiling and another where he appears to be making a gun gesture and looking more serious.

REPRESENTATION THEORY
The Male Gaze (Laura Mulvey)
The cinema apparatus of Hollywood cinema puts the audience in a masculine subject position with the woman on the screen seen as an object of desire. Film and cinematography are structures upon ideas. Protagonists tended to be men. Mulvey suggests two distinct modes of male gaze – “voyeuristic (women as whores) and fetishistic – women as unreachable Madonna’s”. (Also narcissistic – women watching the film see themselves reflected on the screen).
How we treat people (Richard Dyer) Dyer argues that how we are seen determines how we are treated and how we treat other people is based on how we see them. This comes from our understanding of representation. He believes that stereotypes come down to power. Those who have power stereotype those who don’t.

Titles

In our groups we set each other different tasks to complete over the next few days, the task I was given was to look at different fonts for the main title and the following crediting titles.

Firstly I looked at the different types of fonts that we could use for example Sans Serif or just Serif fonts, I put a selection of them next to each other all spelling out the word 'Evangeline' I then compared what ones looked like they would be remotely suitable for the genre. I came to the conclusion using a Sans Serif font would be more suitable because it looked 'witcheyer' and more old fashioned. I then compared them to other fonts that were of the same style,
from here I decided on the two that i thought looked the best (the 3rd and 5th ones down left and right) I then showed these to the other members in my group and asked them which one they agreed with, ending up with the outcome that the 3rd one looked the best. I then looked at what types of font would be best, for example bold or italic. I decided that bold looked better because it made the title stand out better.

We had discussed in class using a symbol to replace one of the letters. to show what this would look like i did a rough sketch of it on paint but in the final thing i would do it in photoshop and save it as an image as it would look more professional, our final outcome for the main title text is this...
the font is Andalus and it will be used throughout the titles, meaning it will also be used for titles such as 'Staring by Sam Bellman, Olivia Plumpton and Sophie Frain'.

Our Final Film Pitch

In lesson we were set the task of pitching our films to the class. This meant that we had to show the PowerPoint to the class and get criticism on whether they thought that our idea would work or even if they liked it or not. After we had shown our presentation we collected the feedback and found that the majority thought that the target audience should be changed from 12-25 to something older and with a smaller range so we changed it to 15-20 which we believe works better with the film. We haven't changed the target audience on the presentation above but we have noted down that we have changed it.

Work Diary Day 1 (10/11/14)

Today was the first day of official progress towards the opening scene project. We all got together in class as a group and started to discuss all of the ideas that we had, we had a wide variety of genres and everyone's ideas were all really good but so different there were horror ideas, rom-com and mythical romance. we came up with a list of all of the things that may go wrong or not work in each of the opening and tried to weigh them out with things that would work or look good, in some there was a lot more negatives than positives so we decided that it would be too hard to do and that we should try and move away from that idea. we then looked again at our ideas all together and came up with the idea of combining all three, for example we took the coming of age part along with the idea of the film revolving around a big secret from Olivia's film 'Fangs of love'. we copied the idea of the group of friends doing work on a project from my idea 'Avis' we also copied the idea of having the title the name of the main character (witch) and finally from the rom-com we interpreted the idea of the titles being shown whilst the main character is walking to a destination. We ended with an idea completely different from all of the others but that still had similarities. The film we have chosen to do is slightly different and more original than some of the films that were previously created. we finished off the lesson by thinking of the genre and we came up with mystery thriller which is original and I don't know of many films that are the same or like it.

Work Diary Day 2 (11/11/14)

Today in class we got into our groups and looked over our final idea. We added things we thought should be included into our presentation and took out things that just weren't working. we then watched other groups pitch their ideas and gave them feedback, we didnt get round to all of the groups including ours meaning that we would have to present it tomorrow (12/11/14).

Work Diary Day 3 (12/11/14)

  • The Craft                          (1996)
  • The Woman in Black         (2012)
  • Practical Magic                (1998)
  • The Witches of eastwick   (1987)
  • Stoker                              (2013)
  • Rebecca                            (1940)
  • Suspicion                          (1941)
Today in lesson we stood in front of our class and pitched our film presentation about 'Evangeline' to them. From this we received criticism that said things like "how will you be able to make it fit into 2 mins? because you've got a lot you want to include", "might be hard to edit the name onto the grave", "audience range might be too wide" for example. We also received feedback from our teacher stating that we should definitely reduce the range between the target audience because it is too large and just doesn't work because people who are 12 years old are highly unlikely to watch and enjoy the same movies as someone at the age of or 25. As we got on and discussed a more suitable age range for our film eh kindly noted down a list of films that were very similar to ours in the way of the genre, themes or production companies. we looked over the list of films watching their openings and noting down things that we liked about them. The list included:

Work Diary 4 (13/11/14)

In today's lesson we looked at film titles and how font is used for effect and how certain fonts are used for specific genres and they wouldn't work if they were to be used for others. for example  and symbols were used This font for example wouldn't work too well if it were to be for a horror or sci-fi film but it would for a rom-com. we drew sketches of what we thought would work as a film title and developed on from there, our first idea looked like this...

It was simple and literaly just read 'Evangeline' the font was more creative and witchy, it looked like either scratches or twiggs forming the letters. this worked because it linked back to the genre, and theme of witches as a comon steriotype is that witches like to practice their magic in the woods. we then looked at other film titles from simular films like 'Se7en', 'Scary movie' and 'Thir13en ghosts' two of these replaced letters with numbers that had significent relations to the film others used symbols like witchcraft symbols to take the place of letters. we then looked up comonly used symbols to represent witchcraft and stumbled across some symbols that represented letters. we then interpreted this into our title and ended up with something like this....

we then looked over it and realised that the twig lettering along with the symbol made it look messy and unprofessional so we changed it to something more traditional with a sans serif font in bold black writing.

we then considered giving it a purple glow around the edges but came to the conclusion that it looked childish and made the film look more like something for a younger audience and less 'creepy'. so we decided to stick with the plain black font.

Today in class we didn't do much towards the creation of our film opening, but focused more on researching film openings and how long the titles are held on the screen. I chose to record the timings of the film 'The Craft' because it is very similar to the one that we are creating, this helped because it gave us inspiration towards what ours would look like.

Work Diary Day6 (17/11/14)

Today we looked over all of the research and planning we already had and set each other tasks to complete, each person in out group got given a task to complete over the next few days.

Work Diary Day 7 (18/11/14)

Today in class we researched things that we needed to include, we looked at what production company we were going to include and decided to go with 'aurora studios' we then researched the types or roles that need to be included into the titles of our film for example the director we recorded all of this in our books. Finaly we discussed possible shooting areas and where we thought would be best. Bellow are photos from us working in class today.

Work diary day 8 (19/11/14)

Reece shots
Today we were looking at the possible shots we could include and what would work with the surroundings we had chosen to work with, we wanted our film to open in a woodland area near a church but we didn't want it to look too syncline and overly horrified, so we attempted to over come this but taking Reece shots and looking at the different angles and camera positions we could use.

Work diary day 9 (21/11/14)

In class we decided we needed to create a second blog to use as a prop in our film opening, this blog will be featured a lot throught the film as it is the charecters first and main source of infomation. We noted down all of the things that needed to be included to make it successful eg
- sepia background to tie into the old fashioned theme.
- general infomation about witches
- dark and eery phont and colours schemes to stick with the genre of our film.
- and finaly infomation about our fictional charecter evangaline including a photo taken of her supposedly before she died in the 1910's.
We also had to take this photo as it had to be of the same actor that is also playing Eva we found it hard to make them look different from each other yet still using the same person.
We had already created our fake witchcraft blog but we hadn't uploaded a photo of Evangeline as at the time we didn't have one, over the weekend part of our group met up for part of one of the days to take the photo and get ideas for the poster we were yet to create. We selected a few photos that we thought were appropriate for what we needed (a Marline Monroe inspired model photo-shoot from the early 1900s) The three best ones are down below.

Work diary day 10 (24/11/14)

From these we then in class picked the one that our whole group believed was best and worked further on that image editing it to make it look even more suitable we edited it a few times changing the colour schemes and placing them all together we chose our final one.
We decided to go with this image because the sepia times suited the old fashioned theme of the witchcraft blog and made the photo look realistic and professional.
We also looked over our story boards and corrected anything we hadn't included, this meant working out the timings of all of the shots and where and for how long each title would have to be up for and where it would be positioned on the screen, we then looked at poster ideas for our marketing campaign we really liked the idea of having the main character at the front and centred with the other secondary characters in a V shape behind her this would be set in the woods and they would all be dresses very formally in big long dresses. We got inspiration from the poster for beautiful creatures and the secret circle, we also had another idea where half of Eva's face would be shown in the right hand side of the screen and in the background there would be Evangeline we got inspiration for this from a poster we saw for a tv series called the vampire diaries.
Today was the first day of filming, we left at 1:30 and walked from school to St. Michaels church we arrived at 2:10 and were set up by 2:15. For the majority of the shots we used a tripod this was so that all of the shots were level. And we moved it around manually to get the shots just how we wanted.

work diary day 14 (26/11/14)

Today we shot scenes 1 and 3 (taken in and around the cemetery) and scene 5 which was taken of Eva when she was walking towards the entrance of the library. Sam and Olivia took turns in filming and directing the scenes with a small amount of help from me but because I was in front of the camera I couldn't help too much. I played the role of Eva. We took numerous takes of each shot to enable high levels of accuracy when editing. Taking several of the same shot mean we can choose the best ones to put together when editing. We tried to be as creative as possible we could being inventive with the how we used the camera to get a wide variety of shots, for one of them I held the tripod and camera upside-down in front of me this was so that we could get a shot of the front of my feet whilst I were walking this we would then flip when we edited so that it was not upside-down.

work diary day ? (10/12/14)

Yesterday we received feedback about our film openings first drafts, after looking at these we figured out that the most important things that we needed to improve were the
  • Music
  • Camera steadiness
  • Title colour/font
  • Length
  • Acting
  • And overall sound
One of the recurring comments that seemed to come up a lot was that the audience 'didn't get it?' that they 'were confused' that they 'it didn't make much sense' a lot of people also questioned whether it was about witchcraft. this caused us to re think how we can make the opening more clear so that it was easy to understand and there was a distinctive scene that showed witchcraft.

Today we were looking at what we could do to achieve this, we figured that it would be easy enough to re do the scenes change the titles and music and shorten it to three mins but we couldn't figure out how to make it more understandable and allow the audience to get it. Then I had the idea, after watching the opening scene to Beautiful Creatures to change it slightly. form this idea we would need to shoot a few more scenes and re write a script and change the story board but this wouldn't take to long. The plot of the film as a whole has not changed dramatically but it has to an extent. The original plot went like this...
  • Eva and her friends are working on a project
  • They discover she is a witch
  • She begins to practice magic and find out more about herself
  • The group finds out that there is a curse upon her and that she has had multiple past lives
  • She tries to find a way to stop the curse
  • Goes wrong
  • Finds who put the curse on her, asks why?
  • Attempts a final time to remove curse
  • Gets help
  • Succeeds
we have kept this but used it as a template and simply gone into more detail and including things like...

  • Eva and her friends are working on a project
  • They discover she is a witch and that she has had multiple past lives
  • She begins to practice magic and find out more about herself
  • The group finds out that there is a curse upon her
  • She tries to find a way to stop the curse
  • Goes wrong
  • Finds who put the curse on her, asks why? this person then ends up trying to make sure that the curse completes its path.
  • Starts to get ill
  • Her birthday is coming up and she is having a masked ball
  • Something goes wrong and she ends up passed out in the woods
  • Gets help from a 'fellow witch'
  • Attempts a final time to remove curse
  • Succeeds with a struggle
  • finds love with her best friend
We then realised that this wouldn't be seen in the first scene but it might help us decide on how we are going to re do the opening to make it more clear. we came up with the idea  of starting in the middle of the film.
we would start with a scene of the woods the camera would then quickly swoop through the woods so that it looked like it was looking for something, it would then pause and a girls body would come into view laying on the floor in the distance. the camera would then zoom into this and adjust itself so that the angle was a birds eye view and that it framed the girls face. The camera would become still once again and her eyes would dramatically open revealing her yellow witch eyes. up to this point there would be no music but a voice over of her talking about how she wishes she could go back to a time she didn't know about magic etc. after this short scene the title would then appear and the music would start after the title disperses it would almost seem like the film is being re wound to the start. here you would see a quick glimpse (not long enough to tell what happens in the film but long enough to see witch things happen) the last scene in this rewind would be her walking [the same scene that we used in our original footage] this would also be the last scene in our opening but it would be played in real time and not rewound straight after. over the top of the music and these scenes you would hear Eva say something similar to 'and this is how it all began'. this would then be the end of our opening scene.

Hopefully this would create more of an enigma, the audience would be able to distinctly tell the gender and what is going on more.

Work Diary Day ? (12/12/14)

Today we went filming, we filmed the first scene in the opening of our film these are some snapshots

Here is an image of Sam once we had finished filming getting ready to leave

Here is an image of me and sam trying to work out where the best places to shoot would be and getting an idea of our surroundings.
This is a picture Olivia took of me applying more lipstick for filming.
bellow is a quote from Olivia about how our filming went ' Even with our biggest efforts to ensure the filming went perfectly, the camera ran out of charge shortly after getting to our location. We were quite annoyed by this but we overcame this by using an Ipohone 5 to film our footage. The quality of the camera is very good but using a phone meant that we could not use the tripod to raise the camera into the air. It also meanr rhat the camera was not kept as still as what we had originally hoped. Apart from that, filming went really well and the footage we got was successful.'
